East Central used superior numbers, especially in the middle distances and distance events to record a clean sweep over Greensburg and Batesville at a triangular event held here Thursday night.

East Central claimed the boys’ event scoring 82 points to 54 for Greensburg and 32 for Batesville. In the girls’ event, the dominance was greater as East Central scored 97 points to 49 for Greensburg and 17 for Batesville.

The difference would have been worse were it not for dominant performances in the field events.

“Overall, despite the conditions, I thought the kids threw pretty well especially when you consider the conditions. Mollye Leas won both the discus and the shot, and I was pleased with the performance of Samantha Smiley in her first time out. She took second in the discus and fourth in the shot,” said assistant coach Dave Jackson. “Erica (Schwering) took second in the shot and third in the discus.”

Jackson found optimistic signs in the boys’ competition as well.

“On the boys’ side, we had a 1-2-3-4 finish in the discus,” he said.

They almost repeated the discus finish in shot when they took all four scoring positions except second, which went to East Central’s Draper. Elijah Harter finished first in both events.

On the girls’ track side, Troy Davis had bright spots as well.

“We got a 1-2 finish from Taryn Owen and Hannah Doerflinger in the 100-meter high hurdles and Veronica Tuley scored in both the mile and two mile,” he said.

The meet turned on the Trojans performance in the distances and the 4X400 relay. They claimed all four spots in the 800, first in the 1600 and three of the top four in the 3200. Only Tuley’s third-place finish averted a sweep.

In the girls’ 3200, East Central’s Casey Doogs finished more than a minute ahead of teammate Nelson. She finished fourth overall in an event run jointly with the boys. Doogs caught Batesville’s Colin Koury at the end of the back stretch on the seventh lap but was unable to pass him. Once he knew she was there, Koury refused to let her by as the two finished almost together with a time within milliseconds at 11:44 minutes.

Results:

Boys events:

High jump: Orndorff, East Central (EC), 5’10”, Duerstock, Batesville (B), Lanning BV, Wright, Greensburg (G).

Long Jump: Rauch (EC), 17’2”, Bauer (B), Duerstock (B), Furney (EC).
