Participants from eight different schools descended on Shriver Field Saturday to participate in the Greensburg Invitational - Cross Bones Relays - which the school hosted for the fifth consecutive year.
The track and field athletes appeared to enjoy the heat of the sun as numerous meet event records were established. Most of the teams were finally able to actually work under conditions other than the dark, cold and damp days Mother Nature has provided lately.
The Lady Pirates started strong with the duo of Mollye Leas and Erica Schwering capturing first in both the discus and the shot put with a new meet record in the shot. The team of Sabrina Smiley and Heather Dance finished third in the discus.
The Pirate girls also placed in the high jump, the sprint medley and the 4X100-meter relay.
South Decatur also brought along a contingent of athletes and placed in the discus, long jump, high jump, the sprint medley and the throwers 4X100. That event is limited to competition from those athletes who participate in the shot put and discus.
The Cougar throwers finished .64 seconds behind East Central’s time and 1:53 minutes ahead of Pendleton Heights, while the sprint medley crew finished third.
On the boys’ side of the competition, the Pirates competed extremely well in the field events.
They claimed a first in the high jump, a second and fourth in the discus, a third and fourth in the shot put, a third in the pole vault and second in the throwers’ 4X100. In field events, the Pirates claimed a fourth in the sprint medley, a fifth in the 4X800 and a sixth in the 4X100.
In the 4X800, 2007 state-qualifier Lander Wenning made up considerable ground, passing two competitor’s in the last 50 yards to earn the fifth spot.
In an event won by the Columbus North team, the throwers eclipsed the old mark set in 2004 by South Decatur in the initial Cross Bones Carnival. That Cougar relay featured Jason Hobbs and Tom Helms, two of the Cougars’ greater athletes.
South also did well in the field events placing in every event except the pole vault. Included in the finishes were third paces in the discus, high jump and throwers 4X100. They also notched sixths in the shot put and high jump.
