The Dwiggins Racing Pick-up Truck Drags got off to a quick start with Jason Lemons in the Semi-Truck event.
In his six-wheeled International Harvester truck, he ran in five straight races to claim the title.
He beat Keith Krieger twice and Matt Krieger twice in three attempts. Both Kriegers drove 10-wheel Peterbilt trucks in what was largely an unsuccessful attempt to defeat Lemons.
After that race, the gremlins bit for the first time. The light on the Christmas tree failed to light on the last race, so they attempted to replace the light bulb. No luck.
They sent one of the crew down to test the laser detectors that trip the circuit to bring the light on. No Luck.
They checked the trip light at the start of the race. No luck.
Finally a large number of the Dwiggins crew tackled the electronics on the pole before locating the problem.
After a fairly lengthy delay, they were able to get the four-wheel drive, four-cylinder engine class started with Nick Anderson in his red Jeep defeating Bill Cleland in his blue Ranger for the class championship. Cleland ousted Jody Biddinger for third and Tom Ratliff for fourth. In the second run of the two-wheel drive race for the four-cylinder engines, the gremlins bit again. The white light indicating a ready status would not light with out lighting two other lights on the Christmas tree. After another delay, they cleared the problem and racing resumed with Steve Kirby winning the class over Brad Rigby. Rigby, who reached the final round with one loss, forced a run-off that Kirby won.
The dune buggy competition did not finish until 9 PM, two hours after the first race. The winner was David Shelton, who was defeated by Bill Wamsley in the last race in the winners bracket. He battled back to defeat third place winner Trevor Cook before outrunning Wamsley twice to capture the crown.
Cody Wamsley was fourth.
In the Diesel competition, Dustin and Kane Simon took fourth and third respectively and Nick Hamilton completed the class unbeaten, overtaking Bob Krieger when he triggered a red light in the final drag.
The sixth class completed before the Daily News deadline was the Super Stock, four-wheel drive competition. Again the race was delayed, this time twice. The start was delayed with an argument over the engine of one of the competitors and again with a problem with the lights.
Bill Dixon defeated Rodney Upchurch for first place with Scott Cristy and Marty Hobbs finished third and fourth, respectively.
The remaining 11 classes will be summarized in tomorrow’s edition if the Daily News.
