The Greensburg Youth Baseball League (GYBL) hosted a regional baseball tournament featuring players from similar leagues from as far away as Terre Haute, Evansville and Lexington, Ky.
Play was twice interrupted by thunderstorms Sunday afternoon delaying the championship round games, if not postponing them indefinitely. When the second, and more severe, storm broke near 6:30 p.m., several semi-final games were still in progress, including a contest between Columbus and Greensburg in the eight and under tourney.
When the rains came, Columbus led Greensburg 9-4 in the fifth inning. Earlier in the day the Avon All-Stars eliminated Greensburg in the quarter-finals of the seven and under league; Edgewood defeated Greensburg in the semifinal round of the nine and under tourney; North Lexington, Ky., behind the pitching of Sam (as in Samantha) Luckett, beat the GYBL All-Stars in the 11 and under league; a well-schooled Brownsburg team ousted Greensburg, 13-4, in the 12 and under tourney and Terre Haute Heat beat Greensburg in the semi-final round of the 14 and under tourney.
Teams were entered from Avon, Batesville, Bloomington, Brownsburg, Carmel, Columbus and Bartholomew County, Connersville, Crawfordsville, Edgewood, Evansville, Franklin Township, Indianapolis, Jennings County, Knightstown, Madison, Mooresville, Noblesville, North Montgomery, Oaklandon, Plainfield, Rushville, Seymour, Westfield and Whiteland in Indiana and Lexington, Ky.
Trophies were presented about 7:30 p.m. to the winning squads based on their seeding out of pool play and the number of runs scored in the games played to that point. They were: Seven and under, Brownstown; eight and under, Bartholomew County White; nine and under, Mooresville; 10 and under, Lexington, Ky. North; 11 and under, Evansville East; 12 and under, Lexington North and 14 and under, Noblesville.
