The Lady Pirates tied Madison 1-1 in soccer Thursday in a heartbreaker.
After nearly 70 minutes of scoreless soccer in which the goalies were doing yeoman duties at both ends of the field, the Pirates broke the scoring drought.
Jamie River launched a kick from the right wing that the goalie successfully blocked but was unable to control. Sara Welage, following the shot, kicked the rebound by her for the game’s first goal at the 10:45 mark.
Moments later Brianna Donnellly attempted to head in a shot that the goalie turned away. She got the rebound in close and had a shot ricochet off the top of the goal before a third shot somehow stayed on the field of play before the goalie was able to collect the ball.
With 5:59 to go in the game, Lesley Hunt launched a shot to the top left hand corner of the goal that Welage attempted to tip up and control. The ball bounced off her fingers and into the net to even the score.
The final heartbreak came when Amanda Coyle launched a shot as time was expiring. The ball eluded the goalie but the horn sounded just before the ball crossed the goal line, denying the victory.
In reserve action, Madison was able to get the last of their paltry four shots past Jillian Kuehl for a 1-0 victory.
