The Greensburg girls freshman team hosted the Olympians of Columbus East on Monday evening and came up short by the score of 45-21.
Columbus East opened the game with a 13-0 run and the Pirates were never able to overcome that slow start. They were able to mount several runs at the Columbus lead, one in the second quarter that saw that Pirates cut the lead down to single digits just before the half, but could not get themselves back into the game after that.
“For the first game, I thought we played pretty well. Columbus East was just so much bigger than we were,” said head coach Gary Bailey. “Our effort was pretty good throughout the game, with some exceptions here and there that cost us some easy baskets for Columbus."
Leading the way in scoring for the Pirates was Channon Brown with eight points, all coming in the second half. Lillie Wolter followed with seven points, and a trio of Pirates, Liz Richardson, Shelby Ward, and Megan Lozier each tallied two to round out the scoring.
“Hayley Williams, Hannah Schroeder, and Kyanna Wolter all did a nice job of defending the much bigger Columbus girls all night," said Bailey.
The Pirate freshman girls will next play at Rushville on Nov. 30.
