The South Decatur varsity baseball team defeated visiting Oldenburg Academy 5-4 Tuesday in a matchup between potential Sectional 60 opponents.
Both teams were eager to play the game without interruption by the weather that had wreaked havoc on spring schedules throughout the season.
“It was a good, tight game,” said head coach Andy Seegers. “OA is a good team, good to get through.”
Oldenburg’s Corey Reynolds threatened with a leadoff double in the top of the first inning, but junior Taylor Kopplin limited the damage and retired the side with groundouts.
South’s Aaron Haley hit a one-out double to start the home half of the second inning. Tyler Hahn hit a double, and sophomore Damen Martin ripped a two-run double to give South the lead.
Kopplin earned the win on the mound, while Campos tallied the save. Kopplin yielded eight hits through six innings.
Martin and Haley each went 2-for-3 on the night.
The Cougars improve to 5-4 on the season and next travel to Triton Central Thursday (tonight), then visit Brownstown Central Friday. Both games are at 5 p.m.
