Rising Sun —
The South Decatur softball team returned to Rising Sun Thursday night for a shot at its first sectional crown since 2010. The Lady Cougars battled second-ranked Rising Sun nearly play-for-play, but ultimately fell to the Shiners 2-0 in the Rising Sun Softball Sectional 60 Championship.
South junior Lizzie Hedger pitched the best game of the season, and Rising Sun was never able to break South’s resolve. Hedger limited Rising Sun, a team that averages 10 to 12 hits a game, to just five hits.
“We didn’t go in there thinking we weren’t going to win this game,” said South head coach Lisa Huff. “We were right there. I’m just proud of them because they played so hard. We had them a little nervous.”
Hedger walked just one batter and struck out two.
“She kept their hitters at bay,” said Huff. “We hit the corners and they didn’t know where to come from. Best game she pitched all year. She had the defense to back her, too. We made some excellent defensive plays.
Junior Julia Miller recorded the Cougars’ lone hit.
“We put the ball in play, just right at them,” said Huff. “(We) stayed fired up. You never like to see a season end.”
Huff said she would have liked to continue working with the players and keep playing.
“I’m very pleased with my team, the way we finished the season,” she said. “We really just started gelling these past few games, then the season ended. It’s a good note to end on. We’re going to miss RayAnn (Noble), but we’re returning everybody else next season.”
