Sponsors make youth baseball league possible

Greensburg — The Greensburg Youth Baseball League (GYBL) is back for another year of fun and hard work thanks to the generosity of several sponsors.

There are many benefits to playing in a youth sport, such as learning the value of effort and perseverance, dedication, and fair play. Thanks to the sponsors who have donated their time and money, the children playing in the GYBL will be able to learn those things this year.

Greensburg Fireman Chris Springmeyer is one of the coaches in the GYBL this year, as he has been for the last seven years, and he credits the sponsors and other coaches for keeping the league going and providing a healthy, safe outlet for Greensburg youths over the summer.

One of this year’s sponsors is Anytime Fitness. Earlier in the month, the kids spent a few hours handing out flyers for the company, to thank them for sponsoring the league. Afterward, as a surprise, Anytime Fitness personal trainer Donnie Barber spent time with the kids doing some sports fitness training, followed by nutritious fruit smoothies. All the kids reportedly enjoyed the extra attention and the opportunity to train for the league.

The lifetime lessons that youth sports teach aren’t restricted to kids either. Springmeyer said over the years, he thinks he’s learned as much from the students as they have from him. He’s been involved in the league since his son was six and plans to continue working with Greensburg youths.

Springmeyer believes that the sponsors have a huge role in the continuance of the youth baseball league. “Any youth sport would have a lot of trouble without sponsors like Anytime Fitness and the Greensburg Fire Department. Without them, and the other sponsors, the kids’ teams may not exist.”

Many of the sponsors feel that youth sports are very important because they teach the kids about so much more than just the sport itself. Responsibility, hard work, and how to be a good winner (or loser) are among the many lessons kids learn while playing and training.

Fire Chief Scott Chasteen said the Greensburg Fire Department supports the youth league because it provides a healthy outlet for the kids’ energy during the summer and it gives them a safe place to spend time with kids their age and learn some lifelong lessons along the way.

The GYBL lasts about two months, beginning in May. While spots have all been filled for this year, anyone interested can look for sign up to begin in late March or early April at the Greensburg Armory. The first game is in May. Springmeyer said that youth sports are always looking for more sponsors and parents to step up and help with coaching.

Youth sports are not always easy. While some kids are naturally athletic, some have to work much harder for it. The lesson that not everything is automatically given to them and they have to work for it is a valuable one and should stick with them for a lifetime, before they pass it on to their own children... hopefully while playing a youth sport.

Any parents or sponsors interested in helping out with next year’s youth league should contact Chris Springmeyer at 614-2894.
