Chargers seek second sectional title in 3 years

Greensburg — For the North Decatur boys basketball team, records can truly get thrown out the window when the sectionals begin Tuesday.

Head coach Kyle Nobbe and the Chargers, 4-15 heading into Friday’s season finale, can put a winter’s worth of struggles and growing pains behind them.

The last thing North will stand for is to be left out of contention for the program’s second sectional championship in three years. Despite starting five sophomores on varsity, North is indeed aiming for a return to the sectional championship game.

Rarely does a team construct a roster without a senior dressing, but the Chargers are sending one of the youngest squads onto the court in school history. All five starters are sophomores, while both juniors have primarily played minutes off the bench this season.

Before the season began, Nobbe said the coaching staff looked forward to working with a younger but eager group of players. Although the excitement for a new season and the coaching staff’s confidence did not translate into a winning record, the Chargers typically played their best against conference opponents. North started Mid-Hoosier Conference play by winning its first three MHC games. However, the Chargers hit a rough stretch of competition from teams in Classes 3A and 4A. North snapped that skid with a 15-point win over South Decatur, clinching its fourth MHC win.

The Chargers open sectional play against a team they have yet to face. Austin (9-10 going into Friday’s season finale) joined the sectional field last season. The winner will play South Ripley (9-11) Friday at 6 p.m. in the semifinal. In the bottom bracket, Switzerland County (16-3) will face Southwestern (Hanover) (1-20) Tuesday at 7:30. Milan will face the winner Friday at 7:30. The sectional championship is Saturday at 7:30.
