Lions down Chargers on Senior Night

Rushville — On a night of celebration for Rushville as the school honored seniors from the basketball team, band and cheerleaders, the Lions capped the night with a victory over North Decatur 77-54.

With the win, the Lions end the regular season 10-9 while the Chargers fall to 4-16.

The 3-pointer was the go-to offense for the Chargers in the first quarter. The Lions opened the scoring with a bucket by Nate Niehoff. North responded with 3-pointers by Dayne Lecher and Donovan Meyer to lead 6-2.

Four straight buckets by Cameron Cox knotted the game at 6-6. The teams traded the lead five times in the quarter before a bucket by North’s Luke Badgley ended the quarter all even at 14-14. For the quarter, the Chargers hit four from behind the arc.

After two early tied scores, the Lions took the lead for good in the second quarter on a Cox bucket to make it 20-18. Four straight points by Ricky Thompson had the Lion lead at 24-18.

A bucket by North’s Dayne Lecher stopped the Rushville run. The Lions pushed the lead to seven at 31-24 on a bucket by Kris Combs. A 3-pointer by Arek Holloway capped the half with the Lions leading 31-27.

A 3-pointer by Andrew Hocker opened the second half, but Rushville came right back with an 11-0 run to extend the lead to 42-30. Alex Yurack’s bucket opened the run and a 2-pointer by Mitch Laird and rebound bucket by Nate Niehoff ended it. A bucket in the lane by North’s Evan Wallpe got the Chargers back on the board.

The lead grew to 14 points at 46-32 on a Laird triple and at 48-34 on a bucket by Combs. The Lions got a bucket in the final seconds by Cox to hold the 52-39 advantage heading to the fourth quarter.

Bryce Dye’s 3-pointer opened the fourth quarter and pushed the Rushville lead to 16 points. A bucket by Wallpe and two free throws by Austin Brown cut the deficit to 12 points. North cut the deficit to 12 on to other occasions, but that was as close as the Chargers could get the rest of the game. Rushville put together a 14-4 run to put the game out of reach.

Cox led all scorers with 20 points. Laird, Combs and Niehoff all had 11 and Thompson finished with 10. North was led by the 13 points of Holloway and 12 of Wallpe.

In the first game of the night, the Lions held the Chargers scoreless in the fourth quarter en route to the 46-35.

Ignacio Martinez led the Chargers with 13 points. Ben Kinker had 12.

North plays in the Southwestern (Hanover) Sectional Tournament Tuesday against Austin at 6 p.m.
