Greensburg — The North Decatur boys basketball team enjoyed a halftime lead in the Southwestern (Hanover) Sectional 45 opener Tuesday night.
However, The favored Eagles held the Chargers in check in the final 16 minutes of the game and advanced 55-52.
Austin (11-10) led 14-8 after the first eight minutes. North, though, turned it up on defense and outscored the Eagles 11-4 to go into halftime leading 19-18.
Each possession was crucial in the decisive second half, especially the fourth quarter. Austin posted a 15-14 third-quarter edge, and then outscored the Chargers 22-19 in the final eight minutes.
The free throw differential did not favor head coach Kyle Nobbe’s squad. The Chargers attempted 20 foul shots, but made just nine (45 percent).
Sophomore Evan Wallpe led the Chargers with 20 points, setting the bar high for the Chargers in future tournament games. Sophomore Dayne Lecher followed with 19, including North’s lone 3-pointer. Sophomore Arek Holloway scored four, while sophomore Donovan Meyer scored three. Adding two apiece were juniors Eric Moorman and Austin Brown, along with sophomore Luke Badgley.
North ends its season with a 4-17 record.
