---- — The North Decatur girls basketball team handed visiting Lawrenceburg its first loss of the season, winning 71-59 Thursday night.

The Lady Chargers outscored the Lady Tigers 26-13 in a decisive fourth quarter.

Lawrenceburg (5-1) beat North by 16 last season. Despite trailing 15-14 after the first quarter Thursday, the Chargers refused to allow a repeat result.

North (5-2) went on a 7-1 run to capture a 21-16 lead less than halfway through the second quarter. Head coach Brad Bryant’s squad entered the half up 36-25, thanks to a 22-10 second-quarter advantage.

The game went in favor of the Tigers late in the third quarter. Following a Lawrenceburg run, North found its lead shrink to four at 45-41. A 3-pointer pulled the visitors to within one, and Lawrenceburg went ahead to close out the third period 46-45.

Foul trouble plagued the Tigers down the stretch. Senior Anna Wallpe tied the game on a free throw, but Lawrenceburg did not go away quietly. A pair of free throws, then an easy layup off a steal, put the Tigers ahead 50-46 less than two minutes into the fourth quarter. Wallpe, though, answered with a putback, and sophomore Mary Hughes tied it on a coast-to-coast score with 5:32 left.

The Tigers led one more time, with 5:12 to go. However, Hughes hit a pair at the foul line to tie it back up and North never looked back. Wallpe hit a pair at the stripe, and after a double-dribble called against Lawrenceburg, senior Andrea Volk scored on a pass from senior Abby Lamb to go up 56-52.

Lamb and Volk fueled the shift in momentum and eventual victory. Volk hit a big triple with 2:03 left that put North up 60-55, which is the closest the Tigers got the rest of the way. Volk went 4-for-4 from the stripe in the final two minutes.

Lamb, meanwhile, scored in a flurry as North’s defense broke Lawrenceburg’s resolve. Lamb scored six points in the final minute of the game, including four off turnovers.

Anna Wallpe finished with a team-high 18 points, including 6-for-9 from the line. Volk hit a pair of triples and shot 7-for-12 on free throws to tie a season-high with 17 points. Lamb followed with 13 (2-for-2) and a trey. Senior Alison Wallpe added 12 (2-for-3) and Hughes scored six (4-for-6). Senior Emma Geis contributed five points.

The Lady Chargers shot 22-for-34 (65 percent) from the stripe overall.

Lawrenceburg made seven treys, but shot just 47 percent (8-for-17) from the line.

North’s junior varsity team also won, 33-32. The JV Lady Chargers led 11-8 at the first stop and 16-15 at the break. North extended its lead, 24-20, after three quarters, but the Tigers closed it on a 12-9 run to fall by one.

Chelsea Hitchcock hit a trio of 3-pointers, while she and Addy Osting each paced North with nine points. Osting added a triple of her own. Morgan Nobbe followed with eight points, including two treys. Olivia Siefert scored four points, and Ashlin Weintraut chipped in three.

The North girls next play Tuesday night at Jac-Cen-Del.
