Lady Pirates take Knights

The Greensburg girls basketball team defeated visiting South Dearborn 56-52 Thursday night.

Although Greensburg did not lead from beginning to end, the Lady Pirates showed resilience by overcoming four deficits to win their second game in the past three outings. The Pirates jumped out in front after South Dearborn had taken an early lead. Greensburg led 12-6 midway through the first quarter, and sophomore Taylor McIntosh made it 16-9 on a pair of free throws. The Knights, however, hit a buzzer-beater to cut it to 16-11 at the first stop.

Greensburg (2-7) scored the first seven points of the second stanza. Senior Joanna Redelman scored in the paint, and junior Abbey Denton’s basket made it 20-11. Redelman then followed with a three-point play to make it 23-11.

The Knights, though, scored on two straight possessions. McIntosh, who helped fuel Greensburg’s second half surge, hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key to put Greensburg back in front 26-15.

Junior Jessica Banaschak joined in the scoring with a mid-range jumper to make it 28-17, and Denton later answered another Knights score with a trey to make it 31-20.

Just as they did to end the first quarter, the visitors hit a late basket to keep the margin within single digits at 31-22.

The Knights (3-4) did not surrender the game easily. The teams exchanged leads multiple times before Greensburg prevailed in the end. Denton and McIntosh paced the Pirate offense from the perimeter throughout the night.

Four Lady Pirates scored in double figures. Denton, the third-leading scorer in the county, led Greensburg with 16 points. McIntosh followed with 12. Banaschak and Redelman each scored 10. Junior Chelsea Hersley scored three, senior Sydney Wettering and sophomore Maddi Hellmich scored two apiece, and sophomore Keauna Schultz chipped in one.

The junior varsity squad also won, improving to 5-4 on the season with a 34-24 victory. Sydney Meyer led Greensburg with 13 points. Claire Fleetwood scored five, while Allie Geis, Gabby Burton, Samantha Cain and Mary Kate Porter each chipped in four.

After Saturday’s scheduled home game against top-ranked Rushville, the Lady Pirates return to the court Tuesday with another home game against Waldron.
