Pirate grapplers compete at Jennings County

The Greensburg varsity wrestling team traveled to Jennings County Thursday night for a chance to measure itself against a state powerhouse. The Pirate grapplers fell to the Panthers 67-18.

Despite the final result, Greensburg head coach Matt Cochran applauded the squad’s effort.

“Overall, the Pirates wrestled hard and gave it a good effort, but we have things we need to clean up,” he said. “There are things we need to get better at. Jennings County is a good team. They beat us and they were the better team.”

Recording varsity wins for the Pirates were Doug Cain, Jackson Michalski and Brandon Butz.

At 170 pounds, Jennings County’s Gilliam won a 4-1 decision over senior Joe Buening.

At 182 pounds, Jennings County’s Peyton Shepherd beat Greensburg senior Colten Black 1-0.

Jennings County’s Jacob Cheesebrew beat Dylan Cain at 195 pounds on a pin.

In double overtime, Castetter (JC) beat Drew Neisius at 220 pounds.

Greensburg sophomore Doug Cain, at heavyweight, won by pin over Asher.

Jennings County won the 106-pound weight class by forfeit.

Greensburg junior Joe Posey was pinned by Ray at 113 pounds.

Greensburg sophomore Brandon Butz won by a pin at 120 pounds.

Greensburg sophomore Jackson Michalski tallied a win at 126 pounds.

Jennings County’s Capes at 132 pounds pinned Greensburg freshman Victor Albaine.

Anthony Engelking (138) pinned junior Jordan Smiley.

Andrew Herrin (JC) pinned senior Blake Wood (145).

Colton Pifer (152) pinned freshman Alden Westhafer.

Gabe Wilson (JC) took the 160-pound class by forfeit.

Greensburg is scheduled to wrestle Saturday at the Delta Invitational against Greenwood, Fort Wayne Northside, Triton and Jay County.

The Pirates’ first home meet of the year is Tuesday night against East Central.

The junior varsity wrestlers also competed against Jennings County. Recording wins for the Pirates were Damon Allen, Travis Gauck, Dakota Ballard and Matt Hobbs.

“I thought the JV wrestled tough. They’re young, and they need to get better.

The JV Pirates will compete against East Central Tuesday night.
