Shirrell, Smothers win YMCA Men's Leagues

Greensburg Daily News

---- — Team Shirrell won a second straight championship and Team Smothers won another in YMCA Men’s Basketball League action.

Shirrell ran away with another Championship as they outlasted Waldron in the Championship game, as both team played games earlier in the day advancing through the Final 4 to the Championship game. In this low scoring affair, Team Shirrell came back from a three point deficient at half to win 50-47. Shirrell won with a balanced attack with only two players scoring in double digits as Jake Ash scored 11 and Chris Shirrell added 10. James Horine of Waldron led all scorers with 16.

Team Smothers very nearly gave away the Championship, with multiple turnovers in the final minutes, but hit key free throws down the stretch to come away with a 1-point victory of Team State Farm 79-78. Joe McKinney led Smothers and all scorers with 22 points, while Byron Balser added 19 for State Farm. This is the second championship for Smothers in the past three YMCA leagues.

We also currently have registration going on for Youth Basketball, Racquetball, Lego Classes, and “Little” Classes along with other program classes. In addition, the Decatur County Family Y.M.C.A. also hosts Wednesday night open gym basketball from 6:45 p.m. to 9 p.m. This is a great way to keep your basketball game sharp as well as finding a team for Sunday’s Adult Basketball League.
