The South Decatur boys basketball team defeated Shawe Memorial Monday night on the road, posting a 57-45 victory.
South started strong with an 18-7 first-quarter advantage and continued to lead by double-digits for the majority of the game. South senior Chris Johannigman scored eight points in the opening period.
The Cougars took a 37-24 edge into the halftime break. Jordan Ortman scored four points to help South build its lead. Shawe closed it to 10 points at 45-35 after three quarters, but the Cougars prevailed with a 12-10 edge in the final eight minutes.
Five scorers led a balanced attack for South and seven Cougars scored overall. Johannigman and senior Andrew Wullenweber, along with Ortman, each scored 11 points. Wullenweber made a team-high three triples. Senior Taylor Kopplin followed with 10 points on a pair of 3-pointers. Senior Kaleb Cunningham added nine points (1 trey), junior Sam Studler scored three and senior Devin Taylor chipped in two.
South shot 5-for-7 from the foul line, while Shawe shot 5-for-10.
