---- — The North Decatur boys basketball team overcame a six-point deficit after the first quarter and rallied to defeat visiting Waldron 50-49.

It signaled the first win in the conference (1-0) and improves the Chargers to 1-4 on the season.

Waldron, ranked ninth in Class 1A going in, outscored North 15-9 in the opening quarter – the only period the Mohawks outscored the Chargers. Less than a minute into the game, North sophomore Dayne Lecher scored the first points of the night to give his team a 2-0 lead. However, Kyle Garner tied it for Waldron just a minute later. North answered as sophomore Luke Badgley took a feed from sophomore Donovan Meyer to go up 4-2. The teams then exchanged 3-pointers, with Lecher answering a Waldron triple to put North back up 7-5.

Waldron committed two personal fouls before North was whistled for its first, with 3:02 left in the quarter.

The teams alternated baskets again, with Wallpe tying it at 9-all off a Badgley assist. Waldron, though, scored the last six points of the period to lead 15-9.

North outscored Waldron 16-11 in the second quarter, trailing just 26-25 at halftime.

Lecher and Wallpe each scored 16 points for head coach Kyle Nobbe’s squad. Lecher hit four 3-pointers on the night as the Chargers made seven. Andrew Hocker added two more triples (seven points total) and Badgley added five points with another trey.

Scoring his first career varsity points was Austin Brown with four points.

The North JV team fell 40-36 in overtime. North led 14-6 after the first stop, but Waldron came back and outscored North 12-2 for a 17-16 lead. The teams played even, 13-all, in the third period before North came back and tied it up at 36-all to force overtime.

Waldron outscored North 4-0 in the extra session.

Ignacio Martinez-Urunuela led North with nine points, including a 3-pointer. Junior Kyle Perdue followed with seven points. Scoring six apiece were freshmen Ben Kinker and Cory Fasbinder. Kinker scored on a team-high two 3-pointers. Sophomore Landon Crites and freshman Kyle Kramer each added four apiece.

North shot 5-for-8 from the foul line.

The Chargers next play Saturday, Jan. 4, hosting another conference game against Eastern Hancock.
