Pirate grapplers place school best at Ben Davis

The Greensburg Pirate varsity wrestling team went to Ben Davis HS for the Super Giant 16 tournament on Saturday and came away as runner-up to the eventual champions from Ben Davis.

“This is the best finish for the Pirates at this tournament,” said head coach Matt Cochran. Greensburg’s previous best was eighth.

The Pirates were leading the tournament going into the final round, but Ben Davis had a tremendous final round to win the tournament.

Leading the way for the Pirates were Zack Bartosz, Joel Chase, Drew Neisius, and Nathan Hayes. All four of these wrestlers made it to the finals and came away with second-place finishes. They are the first Pirate wrestlers to get to the finals at Ben Davis since 2008.

Brandon Butz and Dylan Cain finished in third place. Jordan Smiley, Colten Black, and Damon Allen finished in fourth. Blake Wood, Joe Buening, and Dakota Ballard finished fifth, while Victor Albaine finished sixth. Travis Gauck took eighth, and Doug Cain was ninth.

Cochran said Matt Hobbs and Jacob Ison also wrestled well for the Pirates and were able to earn some points.

Cochran applauded the Pirates efforts afterward.

“I am very pleased with how we wrestled,” he said. “The boys wrestled hard and well all day. To come away with the runner-up trophy is an accomplishment for this team. It is not quite what we wanted (we wanted first!), but we are making progress. This team is improving each time we step on the mat. Our confidence is growing and we can’t wait to get back in the room to get better.”

The Pirates varsity will next see action in a dual meet at Franklin County on Thursday, Jan. 9.

The junior varsity Pirates will host a team tournament this Saturday against Greenfield Central, Whiteland, Lawrence North, East Central, and Connersville. Wrestling will begin around 9 a.m.
