---- — The North Decatur girls basketball team needed a strong offensive performance against an improving Greensburg squad, and the host Lady Chargers responded with a 68-57 win over the Lady Pirates.
North sophomore guard Mary Hughes tallied a career-high 32 points. Hughes hit six 3-pointers to tie a school record. Hughes’ 32 is the most for girls basketball since Jenna Meyer’s 32 Jan. 15, 2013 against Milan. The previous high was 31 by Greensburg’s Chas Lecher, Dec. 12, 2009 against South Dearborn.
North jumped out to a 7-0 lead Friday, but Greensburg scored the next eight points with the help of two 3-pointers from junior Abbey Denton. The Lady Chargers, though, went on an 8-3 run to go up 15-10.
Greensburg senior Joanna Redelman and junior Jessica Banaschak led a Pirate rally that lifted their team to a 26-24 halftime lead.
The Chargers were missing the services of seniors Andrea Volk and Anna Wallpe because of foul trouble.
“With Anna and Andrea on the bench the entire second quarter, I thought we did a nice job of hanging in there and keeping it close,” said North head coach Brad Bryant.
North’s deficit did not last long. Hughes hit four triples in the first four minutes of the second half to put North up 38-33. North led the rest of the way and went inside to seniors Ali Wallpe and Anna Wallpe, putting Greensburg in foul trouble.
Pirate sophomore guard Taylor McIntosh stepped up and helped Greensburg chip at the double-digit deficit. She scored 15 of her 16 points after the break, but Hughes and North senior Emma Geis went to work at the foul line.
Ali Wallpe tallied 17 points for North, while Geis added 10.
Denton finished with 17 points to lead the Pirates. Senior Sydney Wettering scored seven points, while Maddi Hellmich and senior Joanna Redelman each scored six. Emma Wolter and Megan Schmidt added two apiece and Chelsea Hersley chipped in one.
North improves to 8-3 on the season, while Greensburg is 3-10.
Most of North’s final nine games will be against conference teams.
“Our goal now is to really focus on conference play and getting ready for sectional,” said Bryant. “It will be here before we know it. Plus, we are going to really be tested with all games in January being on the road, except for one.”
Greensburg’s junior varsity team defeated North 46-29. Sydney Meyer led all scorers with 19 points. Meyer shot 11-for-18 from the foul line. Allie Geis added 11, while Kate Porter and Samantha Cain each scored six.
