Pirate win 100th for Meyer at Greensburg

Greensburg — The Greensburg boys basketball team built a 61-15 lead at halftime and rolled to a 97-30 win over visiting Hauser Friday night.

By the time Hauser had reached double digits in scoring, Greensburg already had three players in double-figures. The Pirates had six players score in double figures without the starters playing in the fourth quarter.

Four players off the bench contributed in scoring, an effort that pleased head coach Stacy Meyer.

“It was a good ballgame,” he said. “Everybody played and everybody got to contribute.”

Greensburg led 34-7 after the first quarter, fueled by a trio of 3-pointers from junior Macy Holdsworth. Junior Sean Sellers added a highlight with a two-handed slam dunk before the quarter ended.

Meyer was most pleased with the opening of the game and the play of the reserves in the fourth quarter.

“I was proud of the kids for their start,” he said. “They showed high intensity and good focus. We rebounded the ball really well tonight.”

Junior Bryant McIntosh led all scorers with 20 points, including 18 at the half. McIntosh, to the delight of Pirate faithful, delivered a one-handed dunk early in the third. He added a second-quarter triple.

Holdsworth and sophomore Ryan Welage added 15 apiece, while senior Shane Ploeger scored 11 - including six in the fourth quarter. Junior Collin Rigney scored 10, including a pair of treys. Sellers also scored 10. Senior Riley Billieu tallied five in the fourth on his way to a seven-point night. Junior Tom Lawrence came off the bench in the first half and played most of the second half, scoring six. Junior Brad Wilson contributed three points in the fourth.

Meyer chose to bypass the opportunity in the final possessions to target the 100-point plateau.

“That’s not what it’s about,” he said. “It’s about both teams out here trying to get better and competing. I thought those guys in the fourth quarter handled the situation very well. We really focused in on running our motion and we got a lot of back cuts. We weren’t going to settle for jumpshots. We were just going to take high-percentage shots. They executed pretty well there down the stretch. I’m really proud of those kids.”

The win represented Meyer’s 100th as Greensburg’s head coach.

“I’ve been very fortunate to have some good players and very good teams to reach that milestone,” he said. “I’m fortunate enough to be here right now with a good group of kids.”

Greensburg improves to 8-0 overall, while Hauser falls to 0-7.

The Pirates travel to Indian Creek next Friday.
