The Greensburg boys varsity basketball team concluded the first half of the regular season with a 70-49 win over visiting Class 4A Shelbyville Friday night.
The Pirates, who improve to 10-0, outscored the Golden Bears 24-7 in a key third quarter.
Greensburg jumped out to an 18-7 lead after the first eight minutes of the game.
The Golden Bears climbed to within five points on a Tyler Land 3-pointer, 31-26 with 51 seconds left in the half, but sophomore Ryan Welage closed the half with a basket to make it 33-26 at the break.
Junior Macy Holdsworth opened the second-half scoring with a 3-pointer that gave Greensburg a 10-point lead at 36-36. He went on to hit three more triples in the quarter, including one before the buzzer to make it 57-33.
Junior Sean Sellers achieved a career milestone in the second half, surpassing the 1,000-point total early in the fourth quarter.
Sellers finished with a game-high 23 points, including 3-for-3 at the foul line and six rebounds. Holdsworth followed with 17 points, while junior Bryant McIntosh scored 11 (including a 3-pointer). Sophomore Ryan Welage scored eight points (2-for-2 from the foul line).
Senior Tyler Burcham scored three, as well as juniors Tom Lawrence and Collin Rigney with triples. Junior Tye Fleetwood chipped in two points to lift Greensburg over the 70-point mark, the fourth straight game for the Pirates and ninth in 10 contests they scored at least 70.
Greensburg shot 6-for-13 from the line, but made eight triples.
“It was a good win,” said head coach Stacy Meyer. “It was a good challenge for us. The turning point of the game was the third quarter. We came out with a lot more focus and energy. We did it with defense.”
Meyer also applauded Sellers for reaching a milestone.
“for a junior to do that, he's done an outstanding job,” said Meyer of Sellers, who is on pace to become the program's career scoring leader. “That's special. Congratulations to him.”
Nobody for Shelbyville scored in double figures, and the Bears shot 5-for-9 from the line. Shelbyville falls to 2-7 on the season.
Pirate JV edges Bears
The Greensburg junior varsity team improved to 8-2 with a 43-31 win over Shelbyville.
Greensburg outscored the Bears 24-9 in the second half to win.
Junior Tom Lawrence led the Pirates with 15 opints. Junior Brad Wilson scored nine, including 3-for-5 from the foul line. Drew Foster and Tye Fleetwood each scored seven, while Josiah Buell added five. Fleetwood shot 5-for-6 from the line to lead the Pirates' 12-for-17 effort.
