The Greensburg girls tennis team opened the 2013 spring with a 5-0 win over visiting Connersville Tuesday.
“It was a great way to start the season,” said head coach Gary Bailey. “Getting that first win is big.”
The Lady Pirates featured a new first singles player and new faces at all four doubles positions.
Sophomore Danielle Schroeder started fast at first singles, winning the first set 6-1. She fell 6-3 in the second set, but took the match with a 6-2 third-set win. She and her opponent were the last girls off the courts.
“The wind and cold were not great tennis conditions, but she adjusted,” said Bailey of Schroeder.
At second singles, senior Kaeli Fong defeated Hannah Shelton 6-1, 6-0.
At third singles, junior Claire Welage defeated Halley Crum 6-1, 6-1.
At first doubles, sophomores Courtney Nelson and Caroline Pratt defeated Jenna Nobbe and Caitlin Boggs 6-1, 6-3.
The second doubles team of sophomore Olivia Slusher and freshman Abby Bailey defeated Ashlee Wiley and Carlie Tinch 6-0, 6-3.
“I was proud of the whole team,” said Coach Bailey. “Conditions were not the best, but we got off to a very, very nice start. Hopefully the weather will correct itself and we can get some work in.”
In junior varsity action, Greensburg played two singles matches and three doubles matches. Junior Kate Bausback and freshman Kelly Meyer won at singles.
In doubles, sophomore Sydney Reynolds and freshman Mackenzie Kovacich, sophomore Tiffany Springmeyer and junior Tori Giddings, and senior Bindi Patel and sophomore Natalie Rivera, all won their matches.
Greensburg (1-0) will return to the court in six days, traveling to South Dearborn Monday to open play in the Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference.
