The Greensburg varsity softball team opened the 2013 season against South Dearborn, a conference and sectional opponent. The Lady Pirates fell to the visiting Lady Knights 7-2.
Greensburg trailed 6-0 after four innings, but scored two late runs to avoid a shutout.
Head coach Jake Shook watched his team improve at the plate against Kooper Vertz as the game progressed.
“Once we made contact, we were able to relax,” he said. “We faced a good pitcher.”
Recording a hit apiece were senior Audrey Geis, freshman Britney Biltz, sophomore Megan Schmidt and junior Alli Phillips, and Kalynne Asche. Freshman Keauna Schultz walked twice.
Schmidt scored the first run after reaching on a walk. She advanced on a passed ball and a Schultz walk. Asche then singled in Schmidt.
Greensburg plated the second run in the sixth inning. Biltz hit an infield single, then stole second base. She later scored on an error.
Phillips started on the mound, pitching seven innings of six-hit, two-walk ball.
“We came out tight on defense, but settled down,” said Shook.
The Lady Pirates visit Batesville Thursday (tomorrow) for another conference game that starts at 5:30 p.m.
