Freshman Britney Biltz started the Pirates off with a solo home run in the first inning, her first of her high school career.
Greensburg scored three runs on three singles by seniors Clare Owens and Shelby Ward, and Kalynne Asche, aided by one Spartan error. The Pirates led 6-0 after four innings.
Greensburg scored eight runs in the fifth inning. Biltz hit her second solo home run to start the inning. Schmidt recorded a single, followed by a Owens walk, and Keauna Schultz reached base by getting hit with the pitch to load the bases. Ward singled to score Schmidt and Owens. Chelsea Hersley reach base on a walk to load the bases once again. Phillips helped close the game with a grand slam. Asche then reached on a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball, then scored on a Biltz hit to left field.
Emma Wolter came in to pitch the final at-bats in the fifth inning.
Greensburg head coach Jake Shook is pleased with the progress his team has made going into the season’s second week.
“We had a couple mental mistakes on defense tonight, but we settled in and took care of the ball after the mistakes,” said Shook. “We are starting to come around from top to bottom in our batting order.”
Greensburg hosts Jennings County tomorrow (Thursday), starting at 5 p.m.
