Pirates celebrate state title with public

Greensburg — The Greensburg boys basketball program shared its Class 3A State Championship with the public Wednesday night with a tour of the city and a pep rally for the state trophy presentation.

Greensburg players, coaches, staff members and cheerleaders were greeted by the public in the high school gym after being escorted by a squad of police cruisers and fire trucks.

Former Greensburg boys head coach Keith Hipskind, the current dean of students, was the master of ceremonies for a event that more than 1,000 attended.

The Pirates unveiled their championship banner in front of the balcony of the west side of the gymnasium, where the pep band positioned itself.

Greensburg athletic director Bill Edwards was among the first to address those in attendance.

“I’ve worked here since I was 20, and if there is one thing I’ll always’s that,” said Edwards, who then gestured to the gym scoreboard that flashed with the championship final score of 73-70 over Fort Wayne Concordia.

The message drew loud cheers, which were the loudest when Edwards pointed out that the team’s combined GPA is 3.6.

Each team member, coach and trainer were individually introduced to the crowd, along with their parents.

Head coach Stacy Meyer recalled that the first question asked of him, after winning the championship, was about a repeat of the title.

“I can tell you that going into next season, this season won’t even be mentioned to these guys,” said the first-time state champion coach.

Meyer related his feelings during the game at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

“Looking out and seeing all of you guys there - unbelievable,” he said. “I just say this to all our community. Remember that feeling you had - the chills, the cheers, the sense of pride.”

Meyer described the team’s mindset during the regional tournament, on its way to knocking off two of the top-five teams in the state.

“I knew we were going to win regional,” he said about his thoughts after beating Evansville Bosse. “I know these kids. I knew they weren’t going to let Brownstown Central beat them.”

Hipskind followed by reading a letter from North Decatur High School Principal Gary Cook, congratulating the team.

Hipskind then introduced Tom Hunter, the superintendent of Greensburg Community Schools. Hunter acknowledged the dignitaries present, including Mayor Gary Herbert, the city council and school board members.

Luke Messer, U.S. Representative of the 6th Congressional District, complimented the coaching staff after the coaches had spoken.

“Listening to this leadership team, it’s easy to see why they won the state championship,” he said, then addressed the players.

“You will never forget this moment,” he said. “You earned it. You worked hard for it.”

After the conclusion of the rally, dozens of fans and youth lined up outside the gym for autographs from the players.

Greensburg assistant principal Roberta Mock was the key planner of the evening.
