Lady Cougars make Twisters first victim

Greensburg — The South Decatur varsity softball team split its past two games this week, including the Lady Cougars’ first win of the season Monday.

South beat Oldenburg Academy 6-4 Tuesday, and fell to South Dearborn 11-6 Wednesday.

South led 1-0 in the third inning, but the Twisters scored three in the fourth inning to take a 3-1 lead going into the sixth. South scored two runs in the sixth to tie the game. Junior Julia Miller reached on a single and stole second base, then advanced to third on a passed ball. Clarissa Baltus followed with a walk, and Sydney Callahan pinch-ran for Baltus. Callahan stole second, and Tayler Noble singled to left to score Miller and Callahan and make it 3-3.

Junior Ashley Johannigman led off the seventh inning with a walk, then stole second. She advanced to third on RayAnn Noble’s sacrifice, and junior Lizzie Hedger then laid down a bunt single and stole second. Johannigman scored on an error off a ball hit by junior Courtney Billingsley, making it 4-3. Miller then singled to score Hedger and Billingsley for the 6-3 lead.

Oldenburg led off the seventh with a single and scored on an error.

“We started hitting the ball better and putting hits together to score runs,” said head coach Lisa Huff. “The girls were down by two runs, but never gave up and battled back to win the game in the seventh inning. I was pleased with their effort and the improvements we have made since the first game of the season.”

South tallied seven hits and committed six errors, while OA tallied seven hits and made two errors.

Hedger notched five strikeouts with zero walks and allowed three unearned runs.

Lizzie pitched a good game and it was great to pick up that first win of the season.

Miller tallied two singles and two RBI’s. Tayler Noble tallied a single and two RBI, while RayAnn Noble collected two singles. Hedger and Billingsley each added a single.
