Cougars fall to Knights in home opener
The South softball team hosted its first game of the season Wednesday. The Lady Cougars jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Hedger knocked a hit and scored on a Knight error.
Johannigman started South’s next rally by reaching on an error and stealing second base. Morgan Eden walked, and Johannigman advanced to third on a passed ball. After Eden stole second, she and Johannigman both scored when the ball was thrown into the outfield on the attempt to catch Eden stealing.
South Dearborn, though, tied it at 3-apiece. South answered to go back up front. RayAnn Noble tripled, and Hedger sent her home on a sacrifice.
The Knights tied it in the sixth inning and scored seven runs in the seventh for the final outcome. South allowed the Knights to come back thanks to four errors and six hits in the final frame.
South rallied in the seventh, but it was not enough. Billingsley and Brittany Koors each reached on an error and stole second. Miller’s base hit scored two runs to make it 11-6.
“We were putting the ball in play,” said Huff. “We had them.”
Huff said Hedger pitched another solid game. Hedger struck out six batters, walked one and allowed just three earned runs. South committed five errors, including four in the seventh.
Huff credited Julia Miller with her play at third base Wednesday. Miller recorded all three putouts in the sixth inning, and made a diving play to retire a runner on the same play the Knights scored the tying run the first time.
“Julia played a really good third,” said Huff.
South (1-4) plays Edinburgh Friday.
