Local golf teams successful in sectional

Greensburg — The Greensburg, North Decatur and South Decatur boys golf teams each will represent Decatur County in the Regional Golf tournament Thursday.

North Decatur advanced as a team, placing third in Friday’s Greensburg Boys Sectional tournament at the Greensburg Country Club. Although Greensburg and South will miss the regional, three of the top five teams hail from Decatur County and finished within eight strokes of each other.

Advancing for Greensburg, individually, is freshman Keegan McCullough. South Decatur senior Dustin Huff also advanced as a golfer not on a team that qualified for the regional.

Columbus North won the team sectional title with a score of 288. Columbus East was second with a 320, while North Decatur was third after carding a 325. Greensburg just missed the regionals by two strokes, shooting a 327. South Decatur was not far behind. The Cougars tallied a 333.

North seniors Thomas Shobe and Charles Murray each led the Chargers with a 79. Shobe shot a 41 on the front nine and a 38 on the back, while Murray shot a 40 on the front and a 39 on the back. Shobe hit a pair of birdies on the back nine that aided his team’s cause late.

Freshman Dayne Lecher carded an 83 (43-40). Senior Nick Stewart shot an 84 (42-42), while junior David Bokelman recorded an 87 (43-44).

North head coach Dan Borns leads the Chargers to their first regional trip in his sixth season as coach. Mike Stokes guided North to the regional in 2007.

“It’s pretty exciting,” said Borns. “The guys all played really consistent.”

North qualified to extend a season in which the Chargers won the Mid-Hoosier Conference tournament and posted a 17-5 head-to-head record. North won its last 17 meets.

“It’s been a good season,” said Borns. “We’re looking forward to moving on to regional.”

For Greensburg, McCullough led the Pirates with a 74, good for fourth overall and the highest score of golfers on a non-advancing team. McCullough advances to his first career regional meet.

McCullough said he was pleased with his drives and success at hitting the greens.

“I’m happy I finally put it together,” said McCullough. “I set myself up well. I had a lot of solid shots and gave myself good opportunities. I had a couple bad holes, but I came back and persevered, and ended up with a good score.”

For South’s Huff, the Cougars’ top golfer finally breaks through and captures what had eluded him the previous two years. Huff had tied for third as a sophomore, then lost in the playoff at North Branch Golf Course. As a junior, Huff missed the cut by the slimmest of margins.

“I finally got over the hump,” said Huff. “The last two years, I just missed. This year, I just went out there and finally put it together. I didn’t play my best, but I played well enough to get it done.”

Huff shot a 76 after a solid front-nine score of 37, a round that tied for third best among all golfers. He finished with a 39 on the back.

The Cougars missed regional qualification by eight strokes. Following Huff’s 76, junior Andrew Wullenweber shot an 83 (44-39). Adam Fry shot an 84 (41-43), Brayden Helms carded a 90 (46-44) and Nick Schwering posted a 100 (48-52).

South head coach Josh Grossman was pleased to see his team turn in three solid scores.

“We finished eight strokes off third, which is where we’ve been the last three years now,” said Grossman. “I’m happy for Dustin, being his senior year and being so close the last two years. This year, making it out is big. I’m happy for him to make it to regional.”

The regionals will take place in Providence at Champions Pointe, Thursday beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Advancing to the state tournament will be the top three teams, plus the top five low individuals, excluding golfers who advance with a team. Ties for fifth place must be played off in order to advance.
