The South Decatur volleyball team advanced to the Hauser Sectional Championship match Saturday, defeating Oldenburg Academy before falling to Hauser in the title match.
The Lady Cougars topped the Lady Twisters in four sets, 23-25, 25-15, 25-12, 25-16. OA claimed the first set 25-23. South took the second set 25-15, and the momentum turned in favor of the Lady Cougars. After South won the third set 25-12, OA found itself needing a win to keep its season alive. South, though, jumped out to a 12-1 lead in the fourth set. However, the Lady Twisters regrouped and brought it to within five points, 18-13. South pushed its lead to20-13 before head coach Brian Patterson called a timeout. OA scored the next point, but South closed the set and the match with a 4-1 run. South junior Ashley Johannigman helped clinch the final set with two kills.
South head coach Lisa Bennett said her team improved its passing game from the quarterfinal match against Shawe Memorial.
“They played well,” said Bennett. “It took us a little while to get back up. I’m very happy with our progress. We communicated well.”
Hauser subdues South for crown
South fell behind in the championship match against Hauser. The Lady Jets opened the first set with a 5-0 lead before Bennett signaled a timeout. Hauser, though, increased its lead to 9-2. South pulled as close as six on two occasions, trailing 12-6 after a 3-0 spurt. Bennett called a timeout when the Jets tallied the next five points that made it 17-6.
Despite a kill by junior Clarissa Baltus to help spark a rally, Hauser took the first set.
It was clearly evident in the second set that South was not going to depart without putting up a fight. The Cougars took an early 3-1 lead in a set that included eight ties and five lead changes. Junior Julia Miller gave her team its biggest lead up to that point, making it 8-6 on a block-kill. Hauser reclaimed the lead, but a Baltus kill tied it back up at 10-all. A 15-6 Hauser rally, however, put the second set away.
South still had fight left in its game and climbed out of an early 4-1 hole in the third set. This time, the Lady Cougars built a four-point lead at 10-6, thanks to alert passing and an aggressive front row. Momentum swung back in favor of the Jets. Hauser clinched the win with a 19-8 run despite one final Cougar run.
