Meyer on hand for Baseball Skills Camp

The First Annual Indiana All-Star Baseball Skills Camp is being organized to support the Boys and Girls Club of Hancock County.

The camp features an All-Star lineup of four of Indiana’s own, Kyle Gibson, Justin Masterson, Drew Storen and Alex Meyer, all playing professionally after having enjoyed great high school and college careers.

Meyer a right-hander pitching for the Britain Rockcats, earned All-State honors for Greensburg High School. He played collegiately at the University of Kentucky and was drafted by the Washington Nationals in the first round of the 2013 Major League Baseball draft. He was traded to the Minnesota Twins in 2012 and currently ranks as the Twins No. 3 overall prospect. He was a 2013 member of the Arizona Fall League All-Star team.

Meyer finished his first season with the Twins at AA New Britain and has started 16 Minor League games while a member of the Twins, posting a record of 4-3 with 100 strikeouts in 78 innings pitched.

Other former local players will also be assisting with the camp instruction. The camp will feature two sessions of general instruction for specific age groups and will culminate with an exciting moderated meet and greet session, free to everyone, and live auction.

The camp will take place at Molinder Field the Greenfield-Central High School baseball diamond, on North Franklin Road in Greenfield, Ind.

If weather does not permit for the camp to be held outside, the camp will be moved to the Dream Big Indoor facility on North Franklin Road in Greenfield (2274 Fortville Pike).

Session 1, featuring General Skills, will take place Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The session will include pitching hitting, fielding, catching and base running. The cost is $45 for 11 to 14-year-olds.

Session 2 will feature general skills (throwing, playing catch, hitting, fielding and base running). It is from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., for ages 6 through 10, and is $45.

The third session is a Meet-and-Greet that starts at 7 p.m. and is free for kids and adults. It will take place at the Greenfield-Central High School auditorium and will offer autographs, a “Q&A” session and a live auction. Admission is free, but donations are accepted.
