---- — The South Decatur girls basketball team opened conference play Tuesday with a 70-44 loss to third-ranked Southwestern (Shelbyville) at home.
First-year head coach Jessi McConnell said it was tough to compete with the Lady Spartans without stepping out of South’s style of play.
“They were extremely quick on and off the ball,” said McConnell. “We had to play outside of our normal game and just were outmatched all around. They are a great team that showed us we still have a lot to work on.”
South senior Ashley Johannigman posted a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds (six defensive). She added two assists and a steal.
Freshman Stacy Fox followed with 11 points, including a 3-pointer, and added one steal and three rebounds. Freshman Brooke Helms scored six points with three defensive rebounds, two steals and two assists. Senior Julia Miller tallied five points, three rebounds, four assists and one block. Senior Courtney Billingsley followed with four points, two assists, two steals and a rebound, and junior Megan Niese chipped in a 3-pointer, a defensive rebound, an assist and one block.
South committed 22 turnovers on the night and shot 4-for-14 (28.6 percent) from the foul line.
South’s junior varsity squad fell 40-14 in the first game. Southwestern led 12-2 after the first quarter and 24-8 at the half. The visitors maintained the margin with a 35-10 edge through three quarters.
Olivia Watkins led South with four points. Adding two points apiece were Morgan Eden, Courtney Sample, Delanie Diekhoff, Sydney Callahan and Mackenzie Kopplin.
South returns home Friday to play cross-county rival Greensburg (0-2), with the junior varsity game starting at 6 p.m.
