Pirates runners, both boys and girls, win competitive County Meet

Cross country runners from the three Decatur County schools converged at Greensburg High School Thursday for the annual County Meet.

The weather was sunny and calm, with a hint of the fall season evident in the cobwebs that floated between the trees and above the course.

Both Greensburg teams won their respective races. Greensburg sophomore Peyton Buening won the boys race, while North Decatur sophomore Megan Hoover won the girls race.

The top 10 runners in each race earned All-County status, regardless of team finish or size.

Greensburg’s boys scored 23 points, North scored 49 and South Decatur scored 62. Greensburg’s girls scored 20 points, North tallied 43 and South’s girls brought along four runners for an incomplete team.

Buening clocked a first-place time of 17:34 for Greensburg, winning his first career high school race.

He is a two-time All-County runner.

“I was really proud of Peyton’s performance tonight,” said Greensburg head coach Troy Davis. “He ran a very aggressive race and won his first high school cross country race.”
