The South Decatur Cougar football team faced off with the Indian Creek Braves for the home team’s Senior Night game. Unfortunately for the Cougars’ seniors, the Braves won with a score of 42-16.
The first quarter started with a good outlook for the Cougars with a trip to the 1-yard line. However, the Braves were able to gain possession before the Cougars could score a touchdown. Soon the Braves’ Brenden Smith was able to run in two touchdowns, both with an extra point.
During the second quarter, Smith ran in another touchdown, and a pass from Gynson Robley to Ethan Whitaker was thrown complete for another touchdown. All extra points were received leaving the score 28-0 at the half.
The halftime score didn’t discourage the Cougars. After a Braves’ pass thrown complete from Robley to Smith with an extra point received, Brayden Helms made a 3-yard drive for a Cougar touchdown and a two-point conversion was run in by Damen Martin to put the Cougars on the board.
In the third quarter, the Braves’ Hunter Abrams ran in the final touchdown for Indian Creek.
The Cougars, however, were still able to get one more touchdown before the end of their Senior Night; Martin had a 56-yard carry before running in the touchdown and two-point conversion.
The game closed on a Braves’ victory with the score 42-16.
Despite the loss, head coach Rodney Martin and senior Austin Ortman still felt good about the game.
“The first half we didn’t play very well; we weren’t expecting to win,” said Ortman. “We thought that we were going to get beat, then the second half we came out very well. We did not play to our full potential, but we did play very close.”
Coach Martin said of the game, “I hate it for the seniors that we go out on a note like this.”
