Pirate golfers host Chargers in opener

The Greensburg boys golf team hosted a three-way meet at Greensburg Country Club against North Decatur and Jennings County.

Greensburg edged Jennings County 173-179. North took third with a 210.

Greensburg’s Keegan McCullough and Jennings County’s Ian Donnell were co-medalists, shooting 7-over-42s.

“I was really proud of the way we started our season tonight,” said Greensburg head coach Bryce Mize. “The guys had to battle the damp ground and the extremely gusty winds, and they did a great job of putting up respectable scores. I told them before the round that bogey-golf was a good score in that wind, and they exceeded my expectations. I was especially proud of Michael Blankman. After two seasons on JV, he showed tonight that he’s ready for the next level.”

Greensburg scoring: Keegan McCullough 42, Sam Marsh 43, Michael Blankman 43, Cody Bausback 45, Reid Domingo 48, and Brandon Butz 52.

North Decatur: Dayne Lecher 44, David Bokelman 50, Trever Crites 59, Brennan Coy 61, Brian Williamson 60, and Zach Johnson 57.

Jennings County: Tyler Clerkin 49, Jake Simmons 44, Ian Donnell 42, Garrett Day 46, Bailey Wilder 50, and Lane Sawyer 47.

North Decatur: Dayne Lecher 44, David Bokelman 50, Trever Crites 59, Brennan Coy 61, Brian Williamson 60, and Zach Johnson 57.

Greensburg’s junior varsity team won the JV match 196-213, while North was third with 256.

Greensburg scoring for the JV match were Trevor Stapp 44, Anthony Treash 49, Jake Hellmich 51, Kyle Colson 52, and Colten Black 69.

“The JV looked much improved from last year, and I hope that trend continues into the season,” said Mize. “Overall, it was a great night to get our season started.”

A full preview of the Greensburg golf team will be published in Saturday’s print edition.
