---- — The Greensburg varsity softball team started the season with two conference games, winning the latest outing 11-1 over visiting Batesville Thursday.

The Lady Pirates scored seven runs in the sixth inning to enact the 10-run rule and improve to 1-1 on the season.

Senior Alli Phillips pitched seven innings of one-run ball. A full story of Thursday’s win will be published Saturday.

Greensburg traveled to Aurora Wednesday night to open the season. The Lady Pirates faced veteran pitcher Kooper Vertz to open conference action against South Dearborn, and the host Knights beat the Pirates 3-0.

Greensburg freshman Sydney Meyer walked to represent the first baserunner of the game, but was stranded at second base.

The Knights got on the board in the bottom of the first, as Ellen Barrett hit a home run off Greensburg freshman starter Haylee Owens.

Both teams went down in order in the second inning. Each team put the ball in play twice, while the other out was recorded via strikeout.

The Knights’ Rachel Disbro in the third inning was stranded at second after hitting a single and stealing.

Greensburg sophomore Keauna Schultz doubled with two outs in the fourth, and Gabby Burton courtesy ran for her. However, Burton was stranded at second.

The teams exchanged uneventful at-bats in the fifth inning until Owens added a base hit with one out in the top of the sixth. Greensburg stranded her at first.

The Knights scored two more runs on two hits in the sixth, making the final score 3-0.

Vertz struck out the side in the top of the seventh to end the game.

Greensburg’s Owens gave up just two earned runs and five hits in six innings, striking out six batters while walking none. Vertz gave up just two hits in seven innings, striking out nine and walking one for the win.

Barrett went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Morgan Wolfer went 1-for-3 with two RBI.
