Pirates complete journey with state crown

Indianapolis — When the Greensburg boys basketball team won the outright Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference title, the Pirates insisted they weren’t finished.

When Greensburg defeated South Dearborn, Batesville and Madison for a second straight Sectional title after a 19-1 regular season, the Pirates insisted they weren’t finished.

When Greensburg knocked off Evansville Bosse and Brownstown Central, two top-five teams, the Pirates insisted they weren’t finished.

When Greensburg ran top-ranked Mt. Vernon (Fortville) off the court for the program’s first Semi-State title, once again, the Pirates insisted they weren’t finished.

Greensburg found itself trailing Fort Wayne Concordia by 10 points at halftime of the Class 3A State Championship Saturday. The Pirates pulled themselves up by their bootstraps, and for one final time, proved to everyone that they weren’t finished. The Pirates erased a double-digit deficit and clinched a 73-70 overtime victory Saturday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, and brought the championship trophy back to Decatur County.

“These kids, all year, have taken it game by game,” said head coach Stacy Meyer, “and they set an ultimate goal at the beginning of the season to win a state championship. I know a lot of people around didn’t think we could do that, but they stayed with it every day in practice. I thought a big key for us this year was our loss to Batesville. We were getting a little bit sloppy in our play, getting away with some things, and after that loss, we just got going on a roll – especially once we got into the tournament here.”
