Greensburg —

The Greensburg Pirate football team captured its first sectional championship in 23 years Friday night with a 27-19 victory over Indian Creek in Greensburg.

The Pirates improve to 10-2 overall, while the Braves end their season at 9-3.

The Pirate defense rose to the challenge from a potent Braves offense, and the Pirate offense churned out more than 300 total rushing yards to run away in the second half.

The result was Greensburg's first sectional title since 1989, which head coach Scott Moore said validated his team's hard work and preparation.

“This can't be the pinnacle,” said Moore. “We know that Bishop Chatard is the team. Don't take anything away from Indian Creek, because they are solid.”

Both Elliott Green and Ryan Martin, two seniors who have anchored the Pirate backfield all season, and junior quarterback Andy Meadows, made big plays throughout the night. Green (129) and Martin (111) each rushed for more than 100 yards, while Meadows led an offense that gained more than 350 yards on the night.

Senior Derek Chambers added a touchdown run that tied the game at 13-all early in the third quarter. Earlier in the key drive, Meadows connected with senior Justin Dance for a 28-yard pass on third down. Green later added a 37-yard run inside the Creek 10 to sustain the drive.

Green scored two touchdowns on the night. Meadows added a score that put the Pirates up 7-6 on their first possession of the game.

Defensively, the Pirates tightened up in the second half and outscored Creek 20-6 in the final 24 minutes of the game. Senior Jack Eberhardt came up with a crucial interception deep in Pirate territory, and junior Brad Wilson tallied a quarterback sack to help stop Creek's final possession.

Creek turned over the ball on downs as a pass into the endzone was incomplete.

Greensburg will play Indianapolis Bishop Chatard Friday. Chatard beat Greencastle 50-7 in the Sectional 21 Championship.
