Greensburg — The Greensburg girls varsity basketball team opened the winter season against Class 4A Franklin Wednesday. The Lady Pirates fell to the Lady Grizzly Cubs 49-31.

Greensburg fell behind 6-0 out of the gate, but pulled it to 13-9 with two 3-pointers from senior Clare Owens and a trey from senior Audrey Geis.

Greensburg trailed 21-14 at the half.

Franklin pulled away in the third quarter with an 18-7 run, but the teams traded 10 points in the fourth quarter.

“There were many, many things we can build on,” said Miller. “We were way more competitive.”

Greensburg had committed 35 turnovers against Franklin last season and 37 the season before, but the Pirates tallied just 11 Wednesday.

After Greensburg cut away Franklin’s offensive rebounding in the first half, Miller said he was pleased to see the hosts compete and not get intimidated.

“We did not give in,” he said. “We competed. We were very solid defensively most of the night.”

According to Miller, Greensburg’s 5-for-12 effort at the 3-point line exceeded the team’s long-range rate all of last season.

“There’s been a lot of work this summer on that,” he said. “We’re way ahead of where we were last year.”

Owens led Greensburg with eight points and unofficially tallied four steals, and led her team in deflections.

“Owens was terrific tonight,” said Miller of the guard.

Miller applauded senior Shelby Ward for her return from an elbow injury she suffered early last season. Ward scored all seven of her points in the second half, including a trey and a 2-for-2 mark at the foul line.

“She did a great job of executing her shooting,” said Miller. “She’s worked all summer and all fall on her shooting.”

Freshman Taylor McIntosh started her first varsity game at point guard.

“Taylor was very solid and strong in her first varsity start,” said Miller. “She didn’t get rattled or hurried at all.”

Jessica Banaschak followed with four points, while Geis and junior Joanna Redelman each scored three. Redelman hit a 3-pointer in the first half.

McIntosh, Megan Schmidt and Abbey Denton each scored two points.

The Greensburg junior varsity team fell to Franklin 26-13 in the first game.

Freshman Kasey Moeller led Greensburg with seven points. Sophomore Emma Wolter scored three points on a triple, and sophomore Megan Schmidt added one point.

Greensburg next travels to Shelbyville Tuesday.
