Greensburg Daily News
For 47 minutes and 59 seconds of Friday's Regional Championship game at Lawrence North, Indianapolis Bishop Chatard's defense had anticipated keeping Greensburg out of the endzone.
The Pirates would have nothing of it, and fought to the final play of the game despite falling 49-9 in its first regional appearance since 1989.
Senior Derek Chambers took a pitchout from quarterback Andy Meadows, cut back to the middle of the field and followed blockers until determination kept him from getting pushed out just short of the endzone. With nine-tenths of a second to spare, the Pirates were able to celebrate a touchdown and give the Greensburg faithful a reason to drive home with pride in their team.
“We lost the game, but you can never take away a 10-3 record and a sectional championship,” Greensburg head coach Scott Moore told WTRE radio afterward. “A big part of that is because of our seniors.”
The last-second touchdown perhaps reflected the determination and sheer will that defined the team throughout the season.
“That was awesome,” said Moore of the play. “You could tell that once he got inside the 10, he was not going to get stopped from scoring.”
Senior Riley Billieu first put the Pirates on the board with a 40-yard field goal.
Greensburg gave full effort throughout the night, and threatened right out of halftime. Two of the biggest highlights of the night occurred on the same drive. Senior Tyler Burcham converted on fourth down with a run off a fake punt. Seconds later, senior Kyle Moeller caught a pass down the sideline and inside Chatard's 30 yard line.
Unofficially, the Pirates recorded 234 yards of offense, including 192 yards on the ground. Senior Elliott Green carried nine times for a team-high 59 yards. Senior Ryan Martin tallied a team-high 17 carries for 57 yards. Chambers ran nine times for 48, and Meadows ran three times for 28.
Meadows completed 4-of-12 passes for 42 yards.
Greensburg (10-3) concludes the season with a school record-tying 10 wins after winning its second sectional title and first since 1989.
Chatard, a 16-time regional champion and 12-time state champion, moves on to its fourth straight Semi-State appearance.
