Lady Pirates runner-up at Warren Central

The Greensburg girls softball team finished runners-up at the Warren Central Invitational this weekend.

Competing in the tournament were Greensburg, Warren Central, Zionsville and Franklin Community.

Greensburg won Game One, defeating host Warren Central 14-5.

Junior Alli Phillips pitched a complete game. She gave up five runs on nine hits and two Pirate errors.

Greensburg jumped on the board first. Freshman Britney Biltz and sophomore Megan Schmidt each hit one-out singles. Senior Clare Owens drew a walk to load the bases, and junior Alli Phillips singled to score Biltz. Senior Shelby Ward hit into a fielders choice. Warren Central made the play at the plate to retire Schmidt trying to score. Although Greensburg stranded three runners, the Lady Pirates led 1-0.

Warren Central stranded two runners after a single and a Pirate error in the bottom of the first.

A promising second inning that saw the Pirates threaten, was ended by a runner getting picked off. Freshman Keauna Schultz reached on an error, and senior Lillie Wolter courtesy ran. Wolter advanced to second on sophomore Kalynne Ashe’s single, and senior Audrey Geis sacrifice bunted to advance the runners. After Biltz grounded out, Warren Central picked off a runner trying to get back.

The Warriors scored three runs in the bottom of the second on a three-run home run, taking a 3-1 lead.

Greensburg got a run back in the top of the third. Owens was hit by a pitch, and Phillips reached on a fielders choice. Sophomore Emma Wolter courtesy ran, and advanced to second on a Ward single. Wolter scored on a single by sophomore Chelsea Hersley, making it 3-2.

The Warriors were retired in order in the bottom of the frame.

The Lady Pirates broke through in the top of the fourth. Geis hit a one-out single, and Schmidt singled to score Geis from second and tie it up. Owens was awarded first after being hit a second time, loading the bases. An infield fly rule forced a second out, but with two outs and bases loaded, Ward hit a base-clearing triple down the left field line.

The Warriors stranded a runner in the next inning, and both teams went down in order in the fifth inning.

Owens hit her first home run of the season, a solo home run with two outs in the sixth. Her first round-tripper extended it to 7-3.

The Warriors scored two runs on three hits and a Pirate error to make it 7-5 after six.

In the seventh, singles by Ward, Hersley, and Schultz loaded the bases. After freshman Whitney Tallent came in to run for Schultz, Ward scored on a walk by Emma Wolter (8-5). Hersley scored on a single by Geis (9-5), and Tallent was thrown out at the plate trying to score on the single by Geis. After Biltz singled to score Wolter (10-5), Schmidt and Owens both drew walks to load the bases. Biltz scored on a ground out by Phillips (11-5). With Schmidt and Owens at second and third, Ward hit a double to score both runners (13-5).

WC sent four batters to the plate. With one out and two runners reached on singles. They hit a pop fly to left field. We record the second out on the fly out and the third out on the runner that left early on the tag up. 14-5 Pirates win.

Ward led Greensburg at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a double, triple and five RBI’s.

More hitting:  Biltz 2-for-3, two walks; Geis, Hersley, Schmidt single apiece; Owens 1-for-1, home run, two walks, two HBP’s.

“Warren Central hit the ball hard, but we were able to make the plays on defense,” said Shook. “It was a good team win.”

Franklin beat Zionsville 10-0 to advance to the championship game.

Warren Central beat Zionsville 8-5 in the third-place game.

Greensburg falls to Franklin in championship

Greensburg lost 7-0 to a good Franklin Community team in the championship game.

Phillips pitched five innings and Tallent pitched the final two in relief. Pirate pitching gave up seven hits and the defense committed three errors.

Hitting for Greensburg:  Biltz 2-for-3; Schmidt double; Phillips/Tallent single apiece.

“We faced a really good pitcher and held our own with them,” said Shook. “We cut out the three errors, and it would have been a closer ball game.”

Shook said Saturday was a successful day.

“We are very pleased with our outing Saturday,” he said. “Both teams hit the ball hard at us and our defense didn’t back down. Tallent stepped in a pitched against really good Franklin team and didn’t give up a hit. The freshman wasn’t sure about it, but she stepped in there and went to work and did a nice job.”

After hosting North Decatur Tuesday (tonight) Greensburg visits Lawrenceburg Thursday and hosts Madison for a doubleheader Saturday.
