The South Decatur varsity softball team hosted North Decatur for an annual county rivalry Monday afternoon. The visiting Lady Chargers defeated the Lady Cougars 6-2.
The game was close the majority of the night, but North scored three runs in the seventh inning to pull away.
After scoring early to go ahead 1-0, North junior pitcher Myra Steele hit a leadoff double. Freshman Kiley Stier singled, and the runners moved up. Senior Lindsay Nobbe grounded out, and Steele scored on the fielders choice. Freshman Mary Hughes hit a double. Freshman Blair Kramer courtesy ran for Hughes, and scored on a triple by sophomore Anna Schwering.
South head coach Lisa Huff noted that her team left runners in scoring position in three innings, including the bases loaded. Sophomore Brittany Koors and junior Julia Miller had singled, and one out later, Tayler Noble singled to load the bases. However, the next batter grounded to Steele, leading to an inning-ending double play. Steele threw home to Hughes catching, and the relay to first base retired the Cougars.
“We just couldn’t string our hits together,” said Huff.
North rallied by reaching on an error, a base hit and another error, according to Huff.
South junior Lizzie Hedger gave up three earned runs, struck out a batter and walked a batter. South committed four errors.
North tallied seven hits on the night.
RayAnn Noble and Hedger each scored on wild pitches in the same inning.
Hedger led South at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a run. Senior RayAnn Noble went 2-for-4 with a run. Brittany Koors and junior Julia Miller each added a hit, while Clarissa Baltus added a double. Tayler Noble went 2-for-3.
North next plays Oldenburg Academy Thursday (tomorrow) on the road, then hosts Southwestern (Shelby) Friday at 4:30 p.m. South next hosts Milan Friday at 5 p.m.
