Pirates eliminate Bulldogs 9-1

Greensburg — The Greensburg baseball team advanced to tonight’s sectional semifinal by breaking open a close game Thursday with five runs in the sixth inning.

The Pirates improved to 15-5 with a 9-1 win over Batesville, eliminating the Bulldogs.

The game was tied at 1-1 in the fifth inning until the Pirate offense took over. Senior Tyler Burcham singled, and Collin Rigney drove him in with a double to break the tie. Macy Holdsworth followed with a single to score Rigney, and senior Austin Schultz drove in Holdsworth with a double to make it 4-1.

Greensburg sent 10 batters to the plate in the sixth inning. Andy Meadows was hit by a pitch, and Josiah Buell made it 5-1 with a single that scored Meadows. Rigney reached on an error, and Holdsworth delivered a two-run double to break the game open at 7-1. Following a Schultz walk, senior Riley Billieu reached on an error that allowed Holdsworth and Schultz to score for the final 9-1 margin.

Pirate pitching allowed just five hits and struck out 12 Bulldogs. Burcham tallied the win on the mound with five innings of five-hit, two-walk ball. Burcham struck out 10 batters and allowed just one earned run.

Senior Luke Kane pitched two hitless innings in relief, striking out two more batters.

Holdsworth went 2-for-5 at the plate with three runs batted in and two runs scored. Schultz hit 2-for-2 with two RBI’s and two runs. Rigney went 3-for-5 with two runs and one RBI, and Josiah Buell went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Andy Meadows went 1-for-3 with a run. Senior Kyle Moeller reached on a hit-by-pitch.

Sophomore Bryan Hoeing started on the mound for Batesville.

Greensburg advances to play in the sectional semifinal tonight at 7:30 against Franklin County, which beat Lawrenceburg 5-1 in Thursday's second game.
