North Vernon —
The Redlegs Baseball Club 12U team claimed runner-up honors in the North Vernon June Jam Tournament this past weekend.
The Redlegs kicked off the weekend by defeating the Ohio County Rangers 13-1 on Saturday. Seth Wilkerson knocked in six runs, including a grand slam, while pitching three innings of one-run baseball. Aaron Greiwe provided two innings of six-strikeout relief work, while Kyle Shaver chipped in a double and two ribbies.
Game two on Saturday saw the Redlegs continue to cross the plate with a 24-5 romp over the Indian Creek Tomahawks. Conner Barkes picked up the win on the mound as well as going 2-for-3 with three RBI. Kent Biehle enjoyed a three hit game with three RBI; Shaver went 3-for-3, scored four times, and added three more RBI; and Greiwe finished with three hits, two runs, two stolen bases, and one RBI.
The Redlegs outscored the Columbus Crush 11-1 in Sunday’s first game. Joel Norman earned the win on the hill; Shaver continued his hot streak with two more hits, two runs, and two RBI; and Wilkerson provided two hits, two runs, two steals, and one RBI.
In the semi-final, the Redlegs broke open a 2-2 tie in the fifth against the South Dearborn Sluggers with four runs, including a two-RBI double by Barkes. Wilkerson provided a complete game effort on mound, surrounding only two hits and striking out 10 in the 6-2 win.
That set up a Championship game match-up with the Indiana Bulls. With the Bulls leading 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth, back-to-back home runs by the Bulls put the game out of reach, ending in a 4-1 Bull’s win. Barkes pitched a complete game for the Redlegs, allowing only two earned runs. Greiwe doubled in Devon Rodgers for the only run for the Redlegs.
The Redlegs will be conducting tryouts for the 2014 season on two upcoming dates: Thursday, Aug. 8 at the Geneva Rec Center in Scipio from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday, Aug. 10 at Kohler Park in Greensburg from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. All are welcome to attend.
