---- — Milan visited South Decatur Thursday night and handed the junior high Cougar football team its first loss of the season, 28-8.
The Cougars, coached by Troy Meadows, stopped Milan on the first defensive possession on fourth down and took over on their own 30 yard line. South marched the ball down the field with runs from Logan Shafer, Devon Martin and Kordell Meadows. Finally Shafer took the sweep around the right end for the score. Meadows found Shafer in the corner of the endzone for the 2-point conversion, making the score 8-0.
Milan went on a long drive of their own and knotted the score at 8 as the first quarter ended. That would be as close as the Cougars would get.
Milan then scored two more times before half, going in up 20-8. South put a few second-half drives together that ended around Milan’s 20-yard line, but were unable to score due to mental breakdowns and missed assignments blocking.
The defense made adjustments at half and held Milan to one score.
Kordell Meadows came in and played safety, and came up with some key tackles on long Milan runs to prevent them from scoring again.
The Cougars are now 2-1 and have a week off. They will be in action next on Sept. 24 and 26.
