Lady Pirate senior kickers go out with a victory over Shelbyville

The Greensburg girls soccer team honored seniors Morgan Stagge, Janean Smith and Sydney Wettering Thursday night and provided a win over the Shelbyville Lady Golden Bears 6-4.

In the first seven minutes of the game, sophomore Maddi Hellmich was on target notching four goals. She received an assist on her first goal from freshman Michaela Myers.

Wettering provide the next two assists and Hellmich put her fourth away on her own. Shelbyville added their first goal halfway through the first half, while Wettering found the net with 15 minutes left with a give-and-go from Hellmich. The Lady Bears scored two more times for a 5-3 halftime score.

Both teams made many runs and played solid defense throughout the second half, but a foul in the box by Shelbyville gave Wettering a penalty kick that she connected with six minutes to play. The Lady Bears struck right back taking the kickoff down for a goal.

A frantic final four minutes found both teams attacking and trying to find the net, but the final buzzer sounded, giving the Lady Pirates their third win of the season. The win pushes the overall record to 3-6-2.

The Lady Pirates travel to Rushville Saturday morning for an EIAC matchup.

McKella Lynette tallied 14 saves while Shelbyville had a total of 25 shots on the evening.

The Lady Pirates with shots on goal were: Danielle Schroeder, Morgan Stagge, Savannah Harrison, Hellmich, Myers, Wettering, Alyssa Allen, Kasey Moeller, Cara Zeigler, and Sierra Aylsworth.

Solid defense was played by Abby Bailey, Abby Bausback, Smith, Molly Redmon, Aylsworth and Emma Overmyer.

“Everyone on the team got to play and contribute throughout the game,” said head coach Mike Myers. “A total team effort on an emotional night, and it was great to see so many players making key contributions.”

Coach Myers afterward commented on the seniors’ contributions to girls soccer.

“Lastly, a big thank you to the seniors for their leadership and dedication to the program,” he said. “This was a great way to end their home playing career.

“All three ladies will be missed next season, but they have shown how to bring the right attitude and desire to the team day in and day out.”
