The South Decatur girls basketball team honored its lone senior, Sam Miller, Thursday before a conference game against Waldron.
Head coach Amy Macy reflected on the team leader after the game.
“She’s been a real pleasure to coach,” said Macy. "She’s come a long way. She has a positive attitude and always has a smile on her face, no matter what. She’s going to be very hard to replace.”
The Lady Cougars fell to Waldron 54-49 after leading by five points with 50 seconds left in the game. South led 40-37 after three quarters, after trailing 17-7 at the first-quarter stop and 28-26 at halftime.
Four girls scored in double figures for South. Sam Miller led South with 13 points and added a team-high seven steals. Junior Ashley Johannigman followed with 11 points, a team-high 12 rebounds and a team-high four block of Waldron shots. Sophomore Megan Niese scored 11 points and tallied a team-high seven assists. Junior Julia Miller scored 10 points and tallied nine rebounds.
It was not the kind of effort that Macy wanted to see from her squad, which shot just 18-for-33 from the foul line and was edged in offensive rebounds by Waldron in the fourth quarter. Eight players scored for Waldron thanks to the extra chances at the basket.
“We had opportunities,” she said.
South falls to 4-10 overall and 0-5 in the Mid-Hoosier Conference. Waldron improves to 3-11 overall and 2-3 in the MHC.
