The North Decatur girls basketball team advanced to the championship game of the South Ripley Sectional 45 Tournament Friday night.
The Lady Chargers beat Milan 67-17 on the strength of 12 scorers for head coach Brad Bryant.
North ran its offense efficiently and shared the ball throughout the game, enabling every player on the bench to score and play extended minutes.
“This is the first time we had every kid get in the scoring column,” said North head coach Brad Bryant. “A lot of kids played a lot of minutes. The thing I like about this game is, in a game like this, with this kind of score, it could have gotten really sloppy on both ends of the floor, but we continued to play well and made some good decisions on the court. All 12 kids that played, hustled. That’s something we’ve preached over the last couple years.”
North led 20-5 after the first quarter and 33-8 at halftime. Freshman Mary Hughes ignited North’s attack with eight points in the first quarter, including a pair of 3-pointers. The starters played less than four quarters, and senior Jenna Meyer had scored 13 points before the fourth.
Meyer led all scorers with 13, including 5-for-5 from the foul line. Hughes finished with 10 points, while senior Veronica Yager scored eight (3-for-4 from the foul line and a 3-pointer).
Junior Myra Steele contributed seven points off the bench, while juniors Anna and Alison Wallpe each scored six. Junior Abby Lamb added five, including a triple. Seniors Cindy Krieger and Lindsay Nobbe each chipped in three. Nobbe hit a triple from the wing in the fourth quarter.
Juniors Andrea Volk and Erin Yager each shot 2-for-2 from the charity stripe, while junior Emma Geis chipped in two points.
Bryant said he is confident that he will get the best effort from his team in the championship game tonight.
“I told them I really want them to look forward to it,” he said Friday. “They won’t let me down, no matter what. These opportunities don’t happen every season, and we have one tomorrow night. We’re looking forward to tomorrow night. All the kids are really focused and will do their best to try to get North Decatur another sectional championship.”
Jenna Meyer, North’s leader on and off the court, has approached North Decatur history during the sectional tournament. Meyer had 808 career rebounds after the South Decatur game, and was on the verge of passing Rosanne Bohman on the all-time rebounds list at North. Bohman ended her career with 802 rebounds. Meyer grabbed six against Switzerland County and seven more against Milan, making her unofficially the career leader.
“That’s something I’m really proud of,” said Bryant.
