Rigney inducted into tennis coaches Hall

Greensburg — June Ann Wernke Rigney was inducted into the Indiana High School Tennis Coaches Association Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony took place Friday at the Five Seasons Tennis Center in Indianapolis.

Rigney, a 1986 graduate of Jennings County High School, compiled a career high school record of 105-4 at the first singles position and was a member of the All-State team two years.

Rigney went on to attend the University of Indianapolis, where she amassed a career college record of 69-0 at first singles, and 62-1 at second doubles. While at U of I, she was the Great Lakes Valley Conference champion all four years in both singles and doubles, and she received also received the Paragon Award in the GLVC. She participated in the NCAA Division II Tournament in 1988, 1989 and 1990, with her best finish being in the round of the final 16 in 1990. She was featured in Sports Illustrated under “Faces in the Crowd” in 1989 and 1990, and was named the GLVC Female Student Athlete of the Year.

She also received the Walter Brenneman Memorial Scholarship Award from U of I before graduating in 1990; in 2000, she was an inductee into the university’s Hall of Fame.

From 2002 to 2007, Rigney coached girls high school tennis at Greensburg Community High School, where she compiled a 72-24 record with three conference titles and three sectional titles.

Rigney is currently an elementary teacher in Greensburg, where she resides with her husband, John, and two children. Rigney is still actively involved in tennis, as she continues to instruct tennis to her own children as well as other youth in the community.

Other inductees at the ceremony included Kevin Gregory, a Ben Davis High graduate who played at Purdue University; Ron Mencias, who played at Notre Dame University after graduating from Roncalli High; and Bryan Smith, a Center Grove graduate who played at Purdue.
