---- — The South Decatur boys basketball team stayed on the road to play potential sectional opponent Oldenburg Academy Saturday.

The hosing Twisters beat the Cougars 75-55, despite an improved offensive performance from first-year head coach Jordan Stevens’ squad.

Senior Andrew Wullenweber led South with a career-high 21 points on four 3-pointers, a development that pleased Stevens.

“Something we addressed last game was, we need Andrew to score for us,” said Stevens. “Andrew did a much better job for us Saturday. He did a better job of hitting open shots and getting himself open to make them.”

South, though, shot just 5-for-7 from the foul line.

“That’s not nearly enough,” said Stevens. “We need to get contact and do a much better job of getting to the foul line.”

Oldenburg, however, shot 17-for-20 from the stripe.

“Those are easy points,” said Stevens. “It really puts us at a disadvantage.”

Stevens also noted the struggles South encountered defensively, including 11 rebounds on defense.

“We have them too many open looks,” he said. “They shot at a very high percentage. We have a few bugs to work out on defense, and I think our guys are willing to work on things to get better.”

Senior Taylor Kopplin scored 18 points, including four triples. Senior Chris Johannigman added nine points, while sophomore Jordan Ortman scored four. Rounding out the scoring was junior Nick Schwering with three.

Another bright spot for South was senior Myles Lewellyn, who filled in for injured junior Sam Studler. Stevens said Studler, who started against Trinity Lutheran, played well in the first game.

Senior Kaleb Cunningham, who is playing after taking one year away from basketball, also stepped up for South with increased playing time.

“Kaleb is a guy who came back to us as a senior,” said Stevens. “Kaleb’s done a really good job. There’s a lot I saw out of Kaleb’s extended minutes Saturday.”

The junior varsity Cougars fell in the first game.

Next up for the Cougars is a rivalry battle against host North Decatur, Saturday night after the 6 p.m. junior varsity game.
